Trend #2: The end of clickbait in digital media

This is the second of the 26 communication trends that will define 2026, The new report brings news that many of us have been waiting for: the end of clickbait. Recent changes to Google's algorithms have led to a historic drop in traffic on Google Discover, with media outlets losing more than 50% of their audience, and even 100% in some cases. This plunge has put an end to the click-based business model that dominated for more than a decade.

Clickbait, those sensationalist headlines designed solely to generate clicks regardless of the quality of the content, has ceased to be a profitable tactic and has become completely useless.

Google changes the rules of the game

Google, threatened by generative artificial intelligence, has radically changed its strategy. As Oriol Duran, founding partner of Brama, AI systems such as ChatGPT or Claude offer direct answers without the need to visit the media, and social networks prioritise keeping users within their own platforms.

Against this background, Google has made a strategic decision: prioritise quality over easy clicking.

What exactly has changed?

  • Sharp drop in Google Discover: Media that relied on viral traffic have seen their audience disappear overnight.
  • End of the traditional business model: The click is no longer enough. What matters now is real engagement.
  • Prioritisation of valuable content: Algorithms reward content that actually provides useful information and keeps the user satisfied.

The new metrics: quality, retention and loyalty

According to Brama, the new metrics dominating the digital landscape focus on three key pillars:

1. Quality of Content
It is no longer about generating volume, but about creating content that really solves the user's needs. Shallow and empty content is being systematically penalised.

2. Length of stay
How long does the user spend on your content, does he read the whole article or does he bounce immediately? These signals are crucial for today's algorithms.

3. Loyalty and Long-Term Value
Relevance is no longer measured in clicks, but in active subscribers and long-term value: does the user come back, does he or she subscribe, does he or she genuinely share the content?
As Oriol Duran points out: «Quality is no longer an editorial ideal but a necessity for survival.«.

Cultural change in digital media

This change is not just technological, it is deeply cultural. The media that will survive and thrive in 2026 will be those that understand that real engagement is not achieved with gimmicks, but with genuine value.

Misleading headlines, such as those that promise «You won't believe what happened next...», and content designed exclusively for SEO without providing real value, are no longer effective. Neither are clickbait articles with superficial information or strategies based solely on volume of posts.

Instead, what really works is creating original, well-researched, in-depth content with honest headlines that deliver what is promised. Articles should address real user questions, while strategies should focus on building community and trust.

Adapt or fade away

For digital media and content creators, the message is clear: adapt or fade away. Strategies that worked for years are no longer viable.
The media that are succeeding in this new scenario are those who:

  • Investing in quality journalism and strong editorial teams
  • Building loyal communities rather than chasing viral traffic
  • Diversify your revenue streams beyond programmatic advertising
  • Prioritise user experience over vanity metrics

2026: The year of quality

If 2025 was the year of the big shake-up in digital media, 2026 will be the year when quality becomes the only viable way forward. Algorithms will continue to evolve, but the direction is clear: reward real value and penalise noise.
For brands and media agencies, this represents a unique opportunity. Those that have built their strategy on a solid foundation of valuable content will see their work finally rewarded by the algorithms.
As Oriol Duran sums up: clickbait is dead. Long live the content that really matters.
